No New Plastic

Every year in the UK, we send 18 million tonnes of waste to landfill, much of which is plastic. Plastic can take up to 500 years to decompose, and much of it, such as plastic water bottles, is classed as ‘single use’.

We’re looking at all the plastic we use at rijo42, and are cutting it out wherever we can. We now use compostable and cardboard packing as much as possible. Our ultimate aim is to get to a point where we use no new plastic materials at all, and we’re already a good way into our journey.

Green HQ

Our move to new premises meant that we could get our environment how we wanted it right from the beginning, and we’re now operating a ‘green office’. It’s literally green, due to walls of plants which have been shown to boost happiness and productivity levels in office environments. It’s also ‘eco green’, as we operate strict waste separate and recycling policies and encourage energy conservation wherever we can.

Triple Certification

Our 100% Arabica triple certified coffee blend contains 100% Fairtrade organic Rainforest Alliance certified coffee from Peru, making it a great sustainable and ethical choice. The Fairtrade Foundation changes the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fairer deal for farmers and workers in developing countries.

Rainforest Alliance certification means complying with 10 standards including ecosystem conservation and wildlife protection, while organic status is awarded by the Soil Association, the UK's leading food and farming charity.

Nitrogen Packed

All of our coffee beans are packed in nitrogen. Packaging with a nitrogen flush ensures no human contact and helps preserve the coffee beans. Using nitrogen removes oxygen from direct contact with the beans. This prevents oxidisation and ensures the coffee tastes freshly roasted.

Coffee is filled with aromatic oils that create the flavour, crema and the full experience of the drink. Oils, however, oxidise and by packing in nitrogen removes the oxygen in the bag. By removing oxygen and moisture in the package also ensures no bacterial growth.

Biodegradable Capsules

Office Water

Extensive research has shown that we should all be drinking around two litres of water a day, to help us stay healthy and work at peak performance. As a result, many workers buy a bottle of water on the way to work, or add one to their lunch order.

With approximately 13 billion plastic bottles used each year in the UK, though, we’ve added office water filtration machines to our range to help you cut down on plastic waste while keeping staff and customers hydrated.

No Palm Oil

What is the Real Spirit that drives you?

This list of achievements is all the more remarkable as Val had to overcome a series of personal challenges to reach his present position. "During my last year in college in 2018 I was homeless and finished the semester living out of the campus parking garage. While a difficult and jarring situation, I found the struggle forced me to act as a better, more self-reliant version of myself. Taking on challenge in outdoor spaces forces me to become kinder and more resilient and remains a central theme in my life."

This month, Val starts his attempt to be the youngest person ever to ski solo and unsupported across Antarctica to the Geographic South Pole. The record was previously held by Frenchman Mattieu Tordeur who was 27 at the time of this attempt. Val will still be a month short of his 26th birthday on his return.

The journey has been three years in the planning. The route will be long and arduous, and despite careful training Val is fully aware of the danger he’s facing. His route includes a 700-mile ski in temperatures of -40C, with blizzards and storms the norm. As well as the physical depredations he’ll face mental challenges such as intense isolation and loss of motivation.

He’ll be dragging all the survival equipment he needs for the 45-day challenge on a pulk, a small, low sled. As well as clothing, camping and rations, his gear includes rijo42 coffee and hot chocolate.

We applaud Val’s drive and commitment, and we’re delighted that he’s carrying the Real Spirit of Coffee with him to the ends of the earth to support our project Love Our Planet.
